POST 7: EDITOR (2 POSTS): MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT UNIT: NATIONAL CENTRE

Job Description

The Editor is expected to develop, in collaboration with the Teaching and Learning Centre, and Faculties, learning materials and learning/teaching approaches that support the University’s ODel mode of learning. He/she will assist with editing, revising, and producing a broad variety of learning materials and University publications.                  

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review and edit content for grammar, punctuation, style and tone;
  • Revise text for paragraph and sentence-related issues such as flow, syntax and cohesion of ideas;
  • Conduct fact-checking and verify the accuracy of information presented in the content;
  • Assess readability and accessibility of content;
  • Edit and proofread learning materials and University publications for accuracy, clarity and adherence to editorial standards;
  • Simplify language and explain technical terms so that the student understands concepts clearly;
  • Introduce variation in the learning/teaching methods and stimuli in line with Open and Distance electronic-Learning, ODeL;
  • Suggest learning objectives and activities for consideration and insertion into the learning materials by the author and the programme coordinator;
  • Check on the relevance and use of illustrations;
  • Identify suitable juxtaposing of related prose and illustrations;
  • Present learning materials according to the Zimbabwe Open University house-style;
  • Check on the coherence of content, skills and attitudes to be developed in the learner;
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Manager, Materials Development. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

  • A Master’s Degree in English, Communication, Media, Journalism, Literary Studies or related field;
  • Undergraduate Degree in English, Communication, Media, Journalism, Literary Studies or related field;
  • Two (2) years relevant post-qualification work experience;
  • A teaching qualification will be an added advantage;
  • Knowledge of distance education would be an added advantage;
  • Extensive experience in writing, editing and proofreading.
